Dial-Me Launcher

Dial-Me Launcher

I’m excited to share Dial-Me Launcher, a concept interface and UX/UI project designed to create a seamless one-handed experience for large smartphone screens. With screens growing bigger, accessibility often takes a backseat - this launcher flips that script. Designed to keep essential features within thumb’s reach, it prioritizes usability and comfort, eliminating the need for precarious grips or two-handed navigation.

User personas helped shape the Dial-Me Launcher by highlighting the diverse needs of potential users. Feedback of likewise users ensured the design prioritized one-handed functionality, simplicity, and accessibility, making the launcher intuitive and customizable for a wide range of people.

UX Workflow

Challenge:
Designing Dial-Me Launcher presented unique challenges. Creating a one-handed user experience for large smartphone screens required rethinking traditional layouts, which could make it difficult for users to adapt. Additionally, technical limitations posed constraints in implementing advanced customization and accessibility features.

Solution:
To address these challenges, I focused on intuitive design, keeping key actions within thumb’s reach. User feedback drove iterative improvements, simplifying actions and focusing on the overlay. Prototypes tested functionality, ensuring a smooth and accessible experience.

The high-fidelity version of Dial-Me Launcher blends a classic rotary dial with a sleek, modern look, inspired by the smooth control of mobile game trackpads. It offers fun color customization, giving users a stylish, personalized one-handed experience.

Customization

Dial-Me Launcher offers color customization that complements its sleek, modern white design, focusing on simplicity. Future plans include dark mode, a full color spectrum, left-handed mode, folder shortcuts, and the ability to add custom icon sets for even more personalization.

Final Words

I’ve always loved working on the Dial-Me Launcher project, as it could significantly improve user experience. What started as a school project (see images below) has evolved with a focus on simplicity and accessibility. While challenges remain, like adding more interactive features with the use of animated motion design previews, I’d welcome feedback from developers on feasibility and resource usage for an overlay launcher with game-like functionality.

Programs / Apps Used

  • Miro
  • Affinity Photo 2
  • Affinity Designer 2
  • Adobe XD
  • Figma

Why use both Adobe XD and Figma? This project started in Adobe XD but got a fresh remake in Figma after Adobe’s (not) acquisition. It’s all about staying ahead, mastering the tools, and adapting to the ever-evolving design landscape.
